did you compile php or use an RPM? If you compiled from source did you
set the --wtih-mysql flag?

can you connect to mysql from the command line?  There is an issue with
how MySQL < 4  && MySQL >= 4.1 handle the passwords.  

Can you post the errors you recieve?
